San Bernardino Valley College is preparing to have its biggest production to date. "The Wiz," directed by Melinda Fogle, is based on the classic Wizard of Oz story has music, dancing, and comedy, and promises to be an incredible performance that demonstrates Valley College's dedication to celebrating and honoring Black culture. It also showcases how multiple clubs and departments can come together to create something absolutely amazing.
"The Wiz" is a reimagining of the classic story “The Wizard of Oz”, a story that follows Dorothy and her friends on a journey to meet the Wizard of Oz. This interpretation has a Gospel and R&B music flow that provides a rich celebration of Black culture, which has gotten many community members of Valley College excited. With a cast and crew of over 40, it is set to be a huge production.
San Bernardino Valley College has taken on an important task to not only entertain but educate and uplift its audience. This play shows the dedication and passion of the cast and crew and how important it is to them to represent culture in the performing arts.
Trent Harris, a member of the cast and crew states "This is more than just a play; it's a professional production that represents Black culture. It's gonna be lit." Harris's excitement is shared by all involved in the production, as "The Wiz" showcases the talent at Valley College and how they strive to show cultural appreciation.
One of the highlights of "The Wiz" is the way it embraces diversity and makes it relatable to everyone. Mesha Washington, who is playing Aunt Em, describes the show as "timeless, upbeat, ethnic, and diverse." She emphasizes how the story embodies courage, brains, and kindness.
The cast and crew have worked tirelessly to make "The Wiz" a truly magical experience. Their hard work reflects the connection the cast and crew have to the production. San Bernardino Valley College theater department demonstrates how they are a family and are working together to put together this exciting event.
Many clubs and departments such as the Arts & Humanities, Dance, and Music Department have lent their skills to this production. The poster for this show was even created by the Art & Humanities Department. This production has brought together the college's many clubs and departments, promoting unity and collaboration.
The production promises music, dancing, excitement, and soul; offering an immersive experience for families and children. Children of cast and crew will also be included in the play taking on the role as munchkins and flying monkeys.
