B.T.S. @ S.B.V.C: The Unheralded Heroes of SBVC

By Tony Barber

Welcome to B.T.S. @ S.B.V.C.

In the film industry, B.T.S. means behind the scenes.

In this article (and hopefully a series of articles) B.T.S. @ S.B.V.C.; I intend to note and thank our local campus workers and recognize them for all the benefits we derive from their efforts.

Certainly, these employees get paid and likely enjoy additional benefits, but I'm guessing they are rarely considered or thanked for their services provided to facilitate our learning and enjoyable college experience. Much as we have taken to thanking our veterans and other frontline warriors, these workers deserve our respect and consideration for jobs well done that make our educational environs welcoming and more enjoyably better every day.

Lizards, moths, birds, butterflies, and bees are just a handful of species that benefit from and enjoy our gloriously landscaped campus. The landscaping here at San Bernardino Valley College has been meticulously designed to be water-wise and provide habitat for local fauna as well as being stunningly beautiful to experience.

Students, faculty, workers, administrators, and guests to our campus add to the list of those able to enjoy the sense and sights all around us in these lush garden oases. Gardens here at Valley College are more than visually attractive, they are aromatically delicious too. Just walk by them, especially after a rain, and breathe deeply… you'll discover just how magnificent our landscaping here on campus is.

Jennifer Carl is a grounds caretaker here at Valley College. She began last June in 2023 part-time and became full-time in September of 2023. She loves flowers and plants and was meticulously grooming some in a bed and deadheading old flowers to make room for new ones when I met her. She was doing a fabulous job.

Another day when I was working on a film shoot for one of my F.T.V.M. classes, I happened onto the second floor of our San Bernardino Valley College S.B.V.C. gym near the volleyball and basketball courts, and the entire lobby REEKED of cleanliness. I looked around and noticed the windows being cleaned; no small feat with all the glass of our gymnasium. This was when I met Gloria Hernandez.

I thanked Gloria for her diligent service that benefits all of us students who use our gym. Though she was hard at work, she took a moment to speak about her job. Gloria's position is Custodian in charge of the women's gym. She began as a sub for about 2 years prior to COVID, and as of April 19, 2024, had just achieved

2 years at full-time here at San Bernardino Valley College.

Gloria does a fabulous job of keeping our gymnasium clean and sparkling.

Thanks very kindly to the two above workers for their diligent efforts and for taking a moment to identify themselves to me. For all of us here at S.B.V.C. thanks in advance to all the as of yet unnamed workers on our campus that create a positive school experience for our entire student body.
