CLUB RUSH: ADDRESSING PROBLEMS AND CONCERNS

By Jerod Williams

Once every semester, Valley College hosts the prestigious “Club Rush” event. This event was created in order to bring attention to the many diverse clubs Valley has to offer. However, according to many club members and officers who ran the event on September 12th, the event felt both unfun and unsafe.

Many things went wrong during the event and the student body made their concerns very clear. I.C.C staff has heard the complaints and promises to address them for not only next club rush, but other events as well.

PROBLEMS DURING CLUB RUSH

The biggest and most persistent problem during the event, according to students, was that the heat was unbearable. Twisted Taste President Lolita shared her worries, “My main concern was that they had the tables crowded in the hot sun, I was worried that every club member that I had was going to get a heat stroke.”

Allyssa of Twisted Taste added, “20 minutes into the beginning of club rush, I was already sweating like a sinner in church. I started to feel lightheaded and woozy, I already knew at that point I was on the verge of fainting from the heat.”

Many students felt similar sentiments as they had to endure 98 degree weather at the hottest peak of the day.

What exasperated these problems was the absence of tents to give shade to club members. “I asked during the i.c.c meeting if the tents AND tables were first come first serve. to which they replied yes, ” says Maria, another member of Twisted Taste. Many club officers reported similar complaints about the access of tents.

Compounding with the complaints of the heat were the complaints of the cramped space where Club Rush was located. This year's rush was located in the common area, between the Library, North Hall, and Business Buildings, and the Cafeteria. Each club was packed together with very little space in between.

“It was cramped together, it was very hot. It was advertised the day before and poorly,” says Gabrielle, the President of the Writer’s Block.

SOLUTIONS DISCUSSED

Fortunately. I.C.C has heard all of these complaints, and promises to address them for future Club Rush events. I.C.C leaders have taken time to address the issues and offer answers and solutions to students' concerns.

Addressing the tents, the reason that it was so hard for some clubs to get them was because of lack of storage. Staff have not had a good place to store and keep tents, and it becomes tricky when asking other staff members to hold onto tents because they may not get them back.

It was also suggested by both club members and staff to locate the event in a different area, some suggested B 100, a room commonly used for events, another location suggested was the other common area, the middle walkway between the gym, the art department, and the cafeteria.

CONCLUSION

Due to club officials making their voices heard about the Club Rush event. I.C.C says they will do everything in its power to guarantee that next semester event will be handled with much more care
