In Israel on Oct.7 after the Jewish festival known as Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) was over, Hamas would launch an attack from Gaza. An attack that caught Israel by surprise and has so far killed over 1,400 people in Israel and over 4,121 injured. Hamas, surprised by the lack of resistance, would turn the operation into a massacre. Around 199 people have been kidnapped by Hamas. Due to this attack Israel would declare war and its mission is to destroy Hamas completely.
Why is Hamas doing this?
Hamas is a militant group, which is a Islamist organization that was founded in 1987. The group, like other Islamist groups, seek to free the Palestinian territories from Israel. Hamas would take full control of Gaza in 2006. Israel would leave control of Gaza in 2005 which uprooted 9,000 Jewish Settlers. Hamas has also made it clear to destroy Israel and murder Jews. Hamas is also funded by Iran with weapons and training according to the United States Department. Hamas's recent motivation for the attack is to bring attention back to Palestinian cause.
What is the Palestinian cause?
During World War Two, The United Nations sought to divide what was known as Palestine into Jewish and Arab States. In 1948 Israel would declare independence and become a nation, which would lead to the first Arab-Israeli War. Israel would win the war, but displaced around 700,000 Palestinian settlers. Leading to Israel being divided into Gaza, the West Bank, and the state of Israel. The land was called Judea before being changed into Palestine. Palestine is first mentioned by Herodotus 5th Century BCE The Histories. Judea was founded in 934 BCE, which comes from ancient Israel. It was changed into Palestine by Romans in the second century due to a revolt by the Jews. Arabs would not arrive in Palestine until 500 years later with Islam. Due to the division of the land and displacement of Arabs, it would lead to more conflict and fighting over the land.
What is Israel doing about the situation?
Since Israel declared war on Hamas, it launched an assault on Gaza which has killed over 2,600 people. The strikes Israel has launched have injured more than 9,000 people. There has also been a blockade of water, electricity, fuel, and water into Gaza. Israel has cut supplies to Gaza until all hostages from Hamas are freed. Israel also plans on taking control of the Gaza strip and has 300,000 reservists along the Gaza Border. Over 1,100,000 million residents have been moved from their homes in Northern Gaza. Currently Red Cross and other humanitarian aids have arrived in Egypt to help those in Gaza. Though they have not yet been authorized to send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
