On Saturday, November 4th the San Bernardino Unified School District (SBCUSD) hosted the 3rd annual Special Education College and Career Readiness Fair. The event was hosted at San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) The fair included several resources such as a student panel discussion, workshops, community leaders and much more.
The workshops that were included in the fair were from many types of specialized programs such as the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR), the SBVC High Tech Center, Fresno State University, University of Los Angeles (UCLA), the SBVC: Extended Opportunities Program Services (EOPS) and much more.
To many the SBVC High Tech Center was the most significant because they were able to learn about different specialized programs that can help aspiring students in their studies when they start attending SBVC. Ana Bojorquez the Alternate Media and Assistive Technology Specialist said during her presentation of the SBVC High Tech Center that she was “happy to accommodate students with better accessible services through the power of technology.” The technological accommodations that are included for students attending SBVC are services such as audio, braille, tactical graphics, large print and electronic text. One thing to note is that students must be enrolled and approved for those specialized programs in order to receive those services.
The student panel discussion featured SBVC alumni students who have been part of the SBVC Student Accessibility Services (SAS). Notably, Adrian, a current student studying Art at California State University of San Bernardino (CSUSB) and student panelist at the event stated that “This event is important as it gives the families and youth the confidence that they can be the scholars of the future.” Catalina, a parent and community leader emphasized the importance of the event as well by stating that “ This event not only bridges the gap between students and local resources but also serves as a guiding beacon, directing them towards successful educational and vocational paths.”
Ultimately, the Reach Your Dreams College and Career Fair is more than just an event; it's for many a pivotal resource for the Inland Empire community because it empowers students and parents alike with knowledge and confidence, making the pursuit of higher education a more approachable and attainable endeavor.
