The San Bernardino Valley Theater Art Department, in collaboration with SBVC MUSIC, SBVC DANCE, and the SBVC UMOJA-TUMAINI Program, really blew me away with their electrifying rendition of "The Wiz". From the moment the show started, it was clear this wasn't just a show, it was a journey through the world of Oz. The UMOJA-TUMAINI Program's influence was evident and ensured that the Theater department and performance were representing black culture and diversity and captured diversity and unity.
The theater was lively on the final day I attended, with audiences of all ages filling most seats. The musical skills of the band was undeniable and their sound perfectly surrounded the auditorium and kept the audience and performers connected. Every scene was magical with the cast and pit singers musical talent. The intricate set pieces showed proof to the dedication poured into this production and showed the creativity of the designers that transformed the stage into a magical world. Each new backdrop and sets made it feel as though it took place in a different setting.
The songs were flawlessly executed and the clarity of the mics made sure that not a single note was missed. All performers had beautiful voices that helped bring the show to life. The lights and sound effects were all also impressive and showcased all the time and production that went into this musical. The energy from the cast was electric, and the music soared to new heights. The Tornadoes' act was a showstopper, showcasing the diverse range of music from R&B to hip-hop seamlessly.
"Ease on Down The Road" and "Be A Lion" were some of the performances that stood out to me, but every musical number was great. The involvement of children brought infectious energy, especially during Munchkin's vibrant entrance. The colorful costumes and their lively choreography added to the fun atmosphere.
The incorporation of the city of San Bernardino in the dialogue made the experience feel personal in the best way possible and the audience were delighted with its inclusion. The playbill was a work of art in itself and gave credit to all the incredible talent involved in all areas of this performance. The costumes were absolutely amazing. All ensembles spoke volumes about the craftsmanship and attention to detail that was put into this production. The presence of the SBVC Dance team added dimension and grace that enhanced stage presence.
The professionalism shown in the sets and backdrops transported the audience into the heart of Oz, making it an unforgettable experience and made it so we weren’t just watching the stage, but a journey. Overall, "The Wiz" was a dazzling combination of talent, creativity, and heart. It is a true demonstration that the collaborative efforts of all clubs and members of theater were able to bring performing arts to the San Bernardino Valley community!
